Hung parliament: Independents, take as much time as you like
Tony Negline
It's now over two weeks since the Federal election and still no official result.
Personally I think the delay is good.
Hopefully everyone is realising that we're all get along very well without politicians sticking their noses into ordinary human affairs.
At some point we'll need a government simply because some existing laws are unworkable longer term and will have to be fixed. National security issues will also have to be addressed.
Overall it seems that life is going along nicely. We're finding out that most of the time we can successfully solve our own problems.
I think the three independents should take as long as they like. An announcement is expected today. With any luck they won't make up their minds for another couple of months.
Also with any luck they'll reach a consensus which produces a hung Parliament so we have another caretaker government period and therefore another period in which the political class isn't unnecessarily involved in our lives!
To understand my attitude about the constant unnecessary meddling of politicians especially in relation to superannuation, you might like to read my DIY Super column from a few weeks ago: http://www.atcbiz.com.au/r.php?r=88h0q70
But none of this reflects my admiration for our Constitution. It is clearly working extremely well.
How many countries could cope with this level of uncertainty? After two weeks of stalemate some might have descended into chaos or even a military coup.
It seems inconceivable that either outcome would occur here. In any case our military swear allegiance to the Australian Crown not to our politicians. This is another positive aspect of our Constitutional arrangements.
