TAX CONSULTING

Superannuation - It Makes Sense

Gayle asks: I have been investing in shares for some time now and have built up a little nest egg. A friend of mine says that I should have set up a superfund and held the shares in there. What is the benefit of doing this?

Gayle if you hold the shares in your name any income you earn is taxed at your marginal rates. Which for most people will be 31.5% or even as high as 39.5% or 46.5%. Compare this to super funds who are taxed at 15%, or even 0% when you reach age 60 (pension phase). If the superfund receives franked dividends, this could result in minimal tax or even a refund.

Education Tax Refund

With the arrival of the wet weather, it is also that time of the year when our children are returning to school. No doubt the last few weeks have been a busy time for parents psyching their children up for the return and getting all of their school needs ready.

While this can be a frustrating and costly exercise for everyone, it is important to retain all of your receipts for education related expenses as the expenses may be eligible to be included in the calculation of your Education Tax Refund in the 2010 year.

WHK Client Surveys

You may receive an email in coming weeks inviting you to complete a short survey about WHK. As a firm we are always seeking ways to improve our services to our clients and feedback is an excellent tool to achieve that.

WHK Join the Relay

The staff at WHK are getting behind the Cancer Council and are putting their walking shoes on to participate in the Relay For Life. Grafton, Inverell and Lismore are all busy raising funds towards this very special event.

Each office will form a team to walk around a local oval overnight. The relay celebrates those that have survived cancer as well as remembering those that didn't win their battle. Each team is undertaking their own fundraising activities. If you would like to help in their fundraising they would be happy to accept a donation.

The firm is also assisting this great event and has agreed to sponsor the Grafton Relay for $500, this will be on top of the staff's efforts.
