I know some of you will have hit the panic button - it's December and the countdown to Christmas Eve is looming! There is so much to do and so little time during the silly season, which sounds like good enough reason to me to escape to the Bunya Mountains and refuel your spirit this holiday break.

What to do during Summer in the Bunya Mountains

We love every season in the Bunya Mountains but here's a list of our very favourite things to do with family and friends during summer time.

  • The Bunya nuts will start to fall around February. It's so much fun to watch the native animals and birds (as well as people) hurry to enjoy this feast. You'll see piles of empty shells everywhere and then lots of little baby bunya pines start to germinate from their protective seed cases.

  • To chill out, relax and cool down we love to sit next to a gentle Bunya mountain stream, just dip your toe and be shocked at how cold the water is. We've had good rain this year so there is plenty of streams, waterfalls and swimming holes to enjoy.

  • In the quiet backwater ponds, look for the giant barred tadpoles. They are huge and hide amongst the rocks perfectly camouflaged. The kids just love looking for the ones with legs about to turn into frogs

  • A swim at Coomba Falls (Maidenwell) is a definite to do. The water is icy and the surround spectacular, surrounded by huge granite boulders you can either picnic in the grassy areas or practice your rock climbing.

  • Bushwalkers will enjoy exploring the mountain trails but be sure to stay sun safe. There will be beautiful pink lacebark flowers adorning the rainforest tracks and you'll see the Mowbullan Whitewood leaves turn spectacularly red against the green hues of the rainforest.

  • Fishers Lookout is an amazing place. Walk up to the knoll to admire the view and orient yourself with the towns and cities surrounding us. Enjoy the sunset over Bell and beyond. Visit at night to marvel at the myriad of stars and the twinkling lights of the nearby towns and cities.

  • Take the kids spotlighting at night - Walk up Bunya Avenue against the rainforest. With luck you may spot nocturnal animals such as sugar gliders, mountain brushtail possums and the smaller Bunya Mountains ringtail possums. Watch out for Great-barred frogs waiting to catch unsuspecting insects.

  • Enjoy a fun game of Tennis - contact us at the Bunya Mountains Accommodation Centre office to hire the tennis court.

To plan your next Bunya time out - make sure you grab a brochure and a map from our office: Bunya Mountains Accommodation.

You are always most welcome to explore the homes along Bunya Avenue, Bunya Mountains Road, Tolmie & Bell Streets. Just ask us for keys to check out both Estates. It's a good idea to check out the 100 chalets and homes and decide which ones would most suit your needs for your next visit.
