COUCH held a public meeting on Thursday 12th June to
update everyone on the outcome of the proposal that
COUCH put forward to The Hon Stephen Robertson, MP,
Minister for Health. The outcome of the proposal is that
the Radiotherapy Oncology Unit will not be built on the
Reservoir Road but is to be co-located within the
redevelopment of the Cairns Base Hospital on the
Esplanade. COUCH has agreed to this.
Roxanne Ramsey, General Manager of Northern Area
Health Services, Queensland Health advised the meeting
that the efforts of COUCH have advanced the building of
this Unit by many many years. Queensland Health has
given COUCH assurance that the Unit will be built
between 3- 4 years. Also, COUCH is to meet with
Queensland Health and the Federal Government on 30th
June 2008 regarding the election promise of $8.3 million
for radiotherapy and $500,000 for Chemotherapy.
The future commitments of COUCH are:
- To monitor and ensure Queensland Health builds
and operates the radiotherapy cancer care centre at
Cairns Base Hospital within 3-4 years.
- To provide facilities and help to people
affected by cancer. This could include accommodation
for cancer sufferers from outlying areas and also a
wellbeing centre for both patients and carers.
Ideally this would be located near the Cairns Base
Hospital.
Therefore, COUCH will continue to be involved in
numerous fund raising events in order to raise money for
cancer care facilities which are not provided by
Queensland Health.
