Hi [firstname]
COUCH has had a very busy time involving meetings and
correspondence with Queensland Health regarding the
timetable for the establishment of radiotherapy
facilities at the Cairns Base Hospital. We have been
assured by the Minister that this will occur within a 4
year time frame.
We also met with Abel MacDonald and Yvonne Korn,
representatives of the Commonwealth Department of Health
and Ageing together with Queensland Health and it was
confirmed that the $8.3m promised to COUCH will be used
for radiotherapy facilities at the Cairns Base Hospital.
We also managed to have the $500,000 election commitment
for a mixing hood reallocated to purchase 5 chemotherapy
chairs in the Cairns Base Hospital.
On the fundraising and awareness side, we had a great
turnout and response to the Cairns Cancer Crusade
Charity Walk. We sincerely thank all of the volunteers
and sponsors for their assistance.
Special thanks must go to Sandy Astill who put in a
great deal of work in coordinating this great event.
Also to Liz Plummer who was a tower of strength to
everyone. Thank you ladies very much.
The Garozzo and Piccone families got together to
generate $8,000 for COUCH. Garozzo (APSM) and Piccone (IGA)
donated and sold $8,000 of COUCH potatoes and Lui
Garozzo sponsored SPUD, our very own COUCH Crusader
mascot.
The many fundraising events happening around the
region are all appreciated and contribute greatly to the
overall amount. The ANZ Bank had a golf day and raised
$13,664.00. To date, COUCH has raised approximately
$412,000.
Now that Radiotherapy will be built at the Cairns
Base Hospital, we see these funds being used for a
wellbeing centre and accommodation facilities for people
affected by cancer. We believe these are very relevant
and worthy aims for COUCH to pursue.
| Yours sincerely

"Why me?" A question frequently asked by Sally,
diagnosed as having breast cancer and facing a
mastectomy. The subject of breast cancer is
sensitively handled. We see how it affects not
only Sally, but also many of the people who are
closest to her. There are moments of humour,
sadness, love, fear, frustration, friendship and
romance as we learn that for Sally, and thousands
like her, there can be a light at the end of the
tunnel.
