Raycon has designed and implemented solutions for clients since 1992.

We produce and manage bespoke software solutions for clients to streamline and automate their current business functions. This includes process, database, workflow and interface design.

As we move to a zero-carbon future, Raycon manufactures products to hasten the transition and reduce household energy consumption.

Work

When I am asked what an engineer does, it is somewhat difficult to explain. I think the question was best answered by one of my undergraduate lecturers

Engineers are problem solvers.

Dr. Murthy

Whilst engineers are great at solving problems. Sometimes being good at something allows you to get lost in the detail without seeing the larger picture.

I think Sun Tzu said it best

The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting.

Experience teaches you to avoid dry gullies and avoid problems long before they land in your lap.

Simplify your design. Fewer components means simpler construction, less resources, shorter design time, fewer points of failure.

Invest time at the outset to find an elegant, robust solution.

This will always be a wise investment.

Mark Edwards - Director

I founded Raycon in 1992 with a close friend and fellow engineer.

Raycon is a nod to our parents, my father's name was Ray and his was Con. Whilst I ended up growing the business without him, the name endured.

Before university, a wealthy neighbour asked me what I wanted to do. I told him

I want to be an engineer!

He replied, rather uncharitably I thought

Well you won't be paid a lot but it is an excellent education.

Being a graduate in the early 90's then working in the declining Australian manufacturing industry I realised with hindsight he was pretty right.

Engineering gives you the tools to solve pretty much any problem. A source of immense satisfaction when you implement a solution. And immense frustration when you see an obvious problem not solved. Think climate change here.

Whilst I always wanted to be an engineer, I had an intense fascination for computers and coding. I wrote various pieces of software for clients during my undergraduate and postgraduate years to automate time consuming manual tasks.

When an opportunity arose, the first dot-com boom lured me to Silicon Valley in the late 90's and set me on the path of full time software development.

I was involved in two successful internet startups. One being a 5 person operation working from a motel room in Mountain View. Amusingly, Google once asked us for advice on how to monetise their search engine. Needless to say, they did a pretty good job of it in the end.

Alas, the boom turned to bust and I returned to work in Brisbane to eventually establish a small group of clients for whom I provide bespoke software solutions.

Several years ago, whilst looking for one myself, I started building whole house fans.

When I am not working, I am surfing, looking after my teenage children or skiing. I do enjoy photography at times as well.
