Federal Budget Wash-up and Cooper SMSF Changes

Just a few issues this week:

a. I have been asked why I didn't issue a special budget version of this email newsletter.

After reviewing Budget Paper No. 2 which contains all the policy decisions and came to the conclusion that there was not much I could add which wasn't going to be covered by fund manager technical teams.

Last week I made a list of possible changes which would be addressed if the Government

b. Amanda Vanstone published an interesting article in yesterday's Age newspaper.

Of most interest in the article is the hard slog to get the debt under control after the next election. It'll be interesting to see how well the likely new Federal Government sells its message over the long term.

The current Victorian Government has never really reminded citizens that the State's finances and infrastructure are a basket case because of the previous administration. The current NSW administration are in danger of making the same mistake.

c. Cooper SMSF changes - many of these changes are meant to start on 1 July 2012 but we're yet to see any legislation. Will the start date be delayed or will the Government seek to pass retrospective legislation? It'll be interesting to see what the Government do about this. It would be nice to have some announcement.

The biggest issue here is stopping in specie asset transfers between related parties and SMSFs.

Version 6.0 of my SMSF book is now available.
